Experience
Kat fell in love with photography as a child while listening to her grandfather’s stories from his work as a travel writer and photographer. She studied photography as part of a Journalism degree while at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication and has learned from and been photographed by Art Wolfe. Her photography from a year living abroad in Tokyo has been awarded for excellence.
Kat has years of experience in front of the camera as well as behind, having modeled professionally and recreationally for photographers across the county. Kat has been involved in the wedding industry since 2008, when she began writing for Wedding Bee as Miss Cherry Pie. Her love of the intimacy, emotion, and aesthetics of weddings led her away from travel journalism to pursue a career as a wedding and portrait photographer. She founded Persimmon Images with husband Justin in 2009.
Kat’s work has been featured in Shape Magazine, the Seattle Weekly, Seattle Metropolitan Magazine’s Wear What When blog, and in wedding blogs such as Junebug Weddings, Wedding Bee, Project Wedding, and the Broke-Ass Bride.
Justin knew Kat was destined for photography before she did. He bought Kat her first digital camera to pledge his troth while they were college sweethearts and has been addicted to camera tech ever since. He is always pursuing the latest and greatest equipment for their camera kits and scouring photography review blogs to see just what each improvement in gear can bring to his work. Justin’s photographs reflect his love of the cutting-edge: he’s always pushing his camera and lenses to the limit, experimenting with fun and different techniques in lighting, composition, and focus. Justin loves details, silhouettes, and decisive moments. His work adds a little spice to Kat’s sugar, and together they make a perfect team. Justin most often photographs with Kat on wedding days, and frequently on portrait and engagement sessions as well.
