Kerry Park Playground and Seattle Center Engagement | Laura + Keegan

In November, before all the leaves fell from the trees, we photographed Laura and Keegan’s engagement portraits at two of our favorite places– Kerry Park and the Seattle Center. What most people might not know is that Kerry Park, in addition to having a gorgeous and iconic view of the downtown Seattle skyline, also features one of the most outrageous and insane playgrounds in all of Seattle. I’m not kidding… it’s crazy. So, FIRST, we took the classic skyline shots and THEN we went down to introduce Laura and Keegan to this weird playground, where innocuous-looking play structures turn into whirl-and-puke nightmares. When most playgrounds are being dumbed-down, it’s refreshing to see one pays no heed to the flocks of parents who fret when their kids play on anything as intense as a bouncy horse. This one, ironically, only features an injury warning on the (entirely un-scary) slide.

We all played a bit and got more than a little dizzy, then continued to the Seattle Center, where Laura and Keegan shared secrets and a seasonal favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte at the Center House Starbucks. The light was beautifully soft and the fall leaves were a perfect, colorful backdrop for the love we could feel in their smiles. Thanks, you two, for sharing such a beautiful fall day and making Seattle just a little more special for us.

Tokyo Love | Engagement Photos in Harajuku & Shibuya | Rebecca + Robbie

Rebecca and Robbie are Seattle natives who up and moved to Tokyo for an adventure together. Talk about a couple after my own heart! I first met them last summer after they contacted me to ask if it would be a problem working with me remotely, from Japan. “Heck no,” I said, “In fact, I might be heading out there in a few weeks.” And so I did… We met in-person over delicious Udon noodles in Roppongi, hit it off, and the rest is history.

These two fell deeply in love and started planning their future together during one of the most amazing, profound, and stressful experiences a person can have– living abroad. I can only imagine that it will be a wonderful foundation for a lifetime of adventures together. They approach life, and love, with a joyful playfulness that is as hilarious as it is infectious. I’ve loved every minute we’ve spent together so far!

We originally planned to take their engagement portraits in Seattle over the New Years holiday, but when it was decided that I was coming back to Japan for a SECOND time in 2011 (see my recent tsunami relief photographs) we realized that it was the perfect chance to get photographs of the two of them together in Tokyo. For their session, we planned a little date in the heart of Tokyo. First, a walking tour of Meiji Shrine, where we frolicked through the trees of the urban oasis and Rebecca and Robbie wrote prayer cards (ema) to send good wishes for their marriage to the Shinto deities. Then, we strolled Harajuku’s heart of trendy youth fashion: Takeshita street, and ogled the gaudy and grotesque goods for sale. Finally, we took the Yamanote line to Shibuya, where Rebecca and Robbie held hands to wade through the busiest crosswalk in the world — Hachiko crossing — in order to get to the delicious takoyaki just down the street at the Gindako on Center Gai. We said goodbye, and they said goodnight, on the Shibuya station Yamanote line platform while the packed train pulled in to the station. It. Was. Amazing.

Rebecca and Robbie are getting married this year at the lovely outdoor Sylvan Theater at the University of Washington this August, and we’re really, really excited and honored to be there. Thank you both for sharing your love, your joy, and your playful energy. We can’t wait to celebrate with you on this side of the Pacific!

Rainy Day Des Moines Marina Engagement | Juliana + Ryan

Ryan and Juliana celebrated their engagement with a portrait session at the beautiful Des Moines Marina. A little bit of rain (and, toward the end, a LOT of rain) couldn’t keep them from sharing their love. For those averse to photographs in the rain, I present this set as evidence that rainy-day photos can be both lovely AND 100% authentic to the true Pacific Northwest experience.

Here are a few favorites from their session.

We’re all puddle ducks here, what with 5 months of wet(ish) Winter weather, and I think most of us have somewhat of a soft spot for Seattle’s drizzly days. They say that a little rain never hurt anyone… and it certainly has never hurt our cameras! We once photographed an entire wedding day, outdoors, in the rain. Plus, I LOVE me a nice umbrella as a fun prop. So, come on, let’s get wet!

Seattle Center Autumn Leaves Engagement Teaser | Laura + Keegan

Laura and Keegan, you guys are such a gorgeous, fun-loving couple! We had a blast wandering all over Queen Anne with you for your engagement photos, from ogling the city skyline at Kerry Park to sipping a Starbucks latte underneath the space needle. Here’s a little teaser for you, but you’ll have to wait until tonight to see the full set of photos. We promise it will be worth the wait!

XOXO,

Kat + Justin
