Albums have become very important to me as a photographer because of my experience as a bride. Like most people these days, I just wanted my images on disc. I figured I’d just make my own album… I have a background in design and can do a mean layout, so why not, right?
Well, it’s been two years and I’m only now getting around to designing our album. When my wedding was over and life moved on, I found that so too did the ambition for projects like wedding album design. Had I been a photographer at the time and known how hard it would be for me to get around to designing my own album or understood the quality difference between retail/consumer book outlets and professional photographic binderies, I most definitely would have had our photog make us an album. Now, I find myself in the interesting position of offering what the current market demands (a disc of image for purchase) while wanting to educate people on why, most often, that just really isn’t enough.
One of the first things I investigated as a professional photographer was the best of the great book binderies and album companies in the industry. And there are a lot of ’em. It was difficult narrow it down to the one company we knew we’d want to stick with: someone who would provide us with albums that could be alternately sweet, sexy, funky, or classy but whose product spoke undeniably of quality craftsmanship and materials.
Enter Cypress Albums. If it weren’t for Cypress, it would have been very hard for me to pick from a cadre of high quality but quite similar book vendors. Cypress stood out as a bindery that offers truly handcrafted albums (neat!) with quality materials (Japanese bookbinding fabrics!) and a real eye toward archival quality. In person that quality is even more apparent: these albums have texture and personality. There’s an attention to detail in their books that makes them perfectly suited to holding love stories and memories.
At this year’s WPPI conference and trade show in Las Vegas, I had a chance to meet all my favorite album vendors in person and really feel their books. And the Cypress albums were absolutely delicious. So we’ve decided to source our albums solely through Cypress: Hurray! So far, we’ve loved working with them (real people!) and we know that they’ll provide only the best.
The photos in this post are of our mini folios and Cypress swatch book: 18 fabric choices and complimentary ribbons for four types of drool-worthy albums. As our sample albums arrive, we’ll be posting lots of photos of the different styles and options we’ve chosen for you. And we’ll finally be getting an album of our own, too!
